What needs to be covered?
Evidence
requirements
At each level of
Working with Others the specifications contain the following:
- a short overview of what the standard is about
- a description of what the candidates need to know (Part
A)
- an outline of what candidates must do (Part B)
- brief guidance on activities and examples of these.
In addition, the QCA Guidance on the wider key skills Levels 1-4
contains guidance on how candidates should prepare evidence for their
portfolios. It also covers interpretation of the requirements for portfolio
evidence and the way in which assessment must be carried out and recorded.
Information specific to Working with Others is located on pages 20 to
39 (Levels 1, 2 and 3) and 82 to 87 (Level 4) of this publication.
The Working with
Others standards and QCA Guidance can be obtained from the
QCA website www.qca.org.uk
or from QCA Publications.
Part A of the standard
describes what the candidate needs to know and what they should
be able to do, at the relevant level, in order to have the
confidence to apply their skills appropriately. It can be
used to assess learners' prior knowledge as well as their
current capabilities and to identify learning needs. It forms
the basis of what must be taught and learned, and is an essential
tool for devising schemes of work.
Care needs to be
taken to avoid possible role conflicts. For example, an assessor
and candidate may share the objective to achieve key skills.
But this is not acceptable in terms of evidence for one-to-one
working situations, as the role of the assessor would be compromised.
- At Level 1 the student must show that they can work in a one-to-one
situation and in a group or team situation.
- At Levels 1 and 2, two discrete examples can be used.
- At Level 3, at least one example must be provided to include work
in a group or team situation and progress must be checked on two occasions
(for WO3.2)
.
- At Level 4, at least one example must be provided which includes work
in a group or team situation. The exchange of constructive feedback
on progress must be provided on two occasions (for WO4.2).
- Observation may be an important source of evidence in
assessing the candidate's ability to apply their skills
in working with others.
- Candidates will also need to have evidence of relevant questions
asked by the assessor - together with the answers, if checking of knowledge
and understanding of Part A is required. This is to add consistency
and rigour to portfolio assessment. These questions should be used flexibly
to enable tutors to assist candidates to fill in any apparent gaps in
knowledge based on an assessment of the evidence in the candidate's
portfolio. The questions will be marked by the tutor and externally
verified/moderated by the awarding body. Guidance on the effective use
of the additional questions will be provided by the awarding body.
